    Ultrahigh brightness electron beams by plasma-based injectors for driving all-optical free-electron lasers

    We studied the generation of low emittance high current monoenergetic beams from plasma waves driven by ultrashort laser pulses, in view of achieving beam brightness of interest for free-electron laser (FEL) applications. The aim is to show the feasibility of generating nC charged beams carrying peak currents much higher than those attainable with photoinjectors, together with comparable emittances and energy spread, compatibly with typical FEL requirements. We identified two regimes: the first is based on a laser wakefield acceleration plasma driving scheme on a gas jet modulated in areas of different densities with sharp density gradients. The second regime is the so-called bubble regime, leaving a full electron-free zone behind the driving laser pulse: with this technique peak currents in excess of 100 kA are achievable. We have focused on the first regime, because it seems more promising in terms of beam emittance. Simulations carried out using VORPAL show, in fact, that in the first regime, using a properly density modulated gas jet, it is possible to generate beams at energies of about 30 MeV with peak currents of 20 kA, slice transverse emittances as low as 0.3 mm mrad, and energy spread around 0.4%. These beams break the barrier of 10^{18}  A/(mm mrad)^{2} in brightness, a value definitely above the ultimate performances of photoinjectors, therefore opening a new range of opportunities for FEL applications. A few examples of FELs driven by such kind of beams injected into laser undulators are finally shown. The system constituted by the electron beam under the effect of the electromagnetic undulator has been named AOFEL (for all optical free-electron laser)

    Critical Cooperation Range to Improve Spatial Network Robustness

    A robust worldwide air-transportation network (WAN) is one that minimizes the number of stranded passengers under a sequence of airport closures. Building on top of this realistic example, here we address how spatial network robustness can profit from cooperation between local actors. We swap a series of links within a certain distance, a cooperation range, while following typical constraints of spatially embedded networks. We find that the network robustness is only improved above a critical cooperation range. Such improvement can be described in the framework of a continuum transition, where the critical exponents depend on the spatial correlation of connected nodes. For the WAN we show that, except for Australia, all continental networks fall into the same universality class. Practical implications of this result are also discussed

    Primer registro de Scelidotheriinae Ameghino (Xenartha, Mylodontidae) del Piso/Edad Chasiquense (Mioceno tardío) de la Argentina

    he subfamily Scelidotheriinae constitutes a group of mylodontids widely represented in the Quaternary of South America; however, the fossil record of the Neogene taxa is still scarce. In the present paper, a new specimen of this subfamily, corresponding to a right partial hemimandible with complete dental series, is reported. The material was recovered from the lower levels of the Arenisca Albardón Member of the Loma de Las Tapias Formation (San Juan Province, Argentina), assigned to the late Miocene. This finding represents the first record of a member of the Scelidotheriinae from the Chasicoan Stage/Age and provides new information about the anatomical characteristics and the geographic distribution of the Neogene representatives of this subfamily.La subfamilia Scelidotheriinae constituye un grupo de milodóntidos ampliamente representados en el Cuaternario de América del Sur. Sin embargo, el registro fósil de los taxa del Neógeno es aun escaso. En este trabajo se presenta un nuevo ejemplar de esta subfamilia, correspondiente a un fragmento de hemimandíbula derecha con la serie dentaria completa. El material fue recuperado de los niveles inferiores del Miembro Arenisca Albardón de la Formación Loma de Las Tapias (Provincia de San Juan, Argentina), asignados al Mioceno tardío. Este hallazgo representa el primer registro de un Scelidotheriinae para el Piso/Edad Chasiquense y aporta nueva información sobre las características anatómicas y la distribución geográfica de los representantes neógenos de esta subfamilia

    Network Automata: Coupling structure and function in real-world networks

    We introduce Network Automata, a framework which couples the topological evolution of a network to its structure. It is useful for dealing with networks in which the topology evolves according to some specified microscopic rules and, simultaneously, there is a dynamic process taking place on the network that both depends on its structure but is also capable of modifying it. It is a generic framework for modeling systems in which network structure, dynamics, and function are interrelated. At the practical level, this framework allows for easy implementation of the microscopic rules involved in such systems.     The gustin (CA6) gene polymorphism, rs2274333 (A/G), as a mechanistic link between PROP tasting and fungiform taste papilla density and maintenance

    Taste sensitivity to PROP varies greatly among individuals and is associated with polymorphisms in the bitter receptor gene TAS2R38, and with differences in fungiform papilla density on the anterior tongue surface. Recently we showed that the PROP non-taster phenotype is strongly associated with the G variant of polymorphism rs2274333 (A/G) of the gene that controls the salivary trophic factor, gustin. The aims of this study were 1) to investigate the role of gustin gene polymorphism rs2274333 (A/G), in PROP sensitivity and fungiform papilla density and morphology, and 2) to investigate the effect of this gustin gene polymorphism on cell proliferation and metabolic activity. Sixty-four subjects were genotyped for both genes by PCR techniques, their PROP sensitivity was assessed by scaling and threshold methods, and their fungiform papilla density, diameter and morphology were determined. In vitro experiments examined cell proliferation and metabolic activity, following treatment with saliva of individuals with and without the gustin gene mutation, and with isolated protein, in the two iso-forms. Gustin and TAS2R38 genotypes were associated with PROP threshold (p=0.0001 and p=0.0042), but bitterness intensity was mostly determined by TAS2R38 genotypes (p<0.000001). Fungiform papillae densities were associated with both genotypes (p<0.014) (with a stronger effect for gustin; p=0.0006), but papilla morphology was a function of gustin alone (p<0.0012). Treatment of isolated cells with saliva from individuals with the AA form of gustin or direct application of the active iso-form of gustin protein increased cell proliferation and metabolic activity (p<0.0135). These novel findings suggest that the rs2274333 polymorphism of the gustin gene affects PROP sensitivity by acting on fungiform papilla development and maintenance, and could provide the first mechanistic explanation for why PROP super-tasters are more responsive to a broad range of oral stimul

    Diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis: MRI in clinical practice.

    BACKGROUND: Recent changes in the understanding and management of multiple sclerosis (MS) have increased the role of MRI in supporting diagnosis and disease monitoring. However, published guidelines on the use of MRI in MS do not translate easily into different clinical settings and considerable variation in practice remains. Here, informed by published guidelines for the use of MRI in MS, we identified a clinically informative MRI protocol applicable in a variety of clinical settings, from district general hospitals to tertiary centres. METHODS: MS specialists geographically representing the UK National Health Service and with expertise in MRI examined existing guidelines on the use of MRI in MS and identification of challenges in their applications in various clinical settings informed the formulation of a feasible MRI protocol. RESULTS: We identified a minimum set of MRI information, based on clinical relevance, as well as on applicability to various clinical settings. This informed the selection of MRI acquisitions for scanning protocols, differentiated on the basis of their purpose and stage of the disease, and indication of timing for scans. Advice on standardisation of MRI requests and reporting, and proposed timing and frequency of MRI scans were generated. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed MRI protocol can adapt to a range of clinical settings, aiding the impetus towards standardisation of practice and offering an example of research-informed service improvement to support optimisation of resources. Other neurological conditions, where a gap still exists between published guidelines and their clinical implementation, may benefit from this same approach

    Hawks and Doves on Small-World Networks

    We explore the Hawk-Dove game on networks with topologies ranging from regular lattices to random graphs with small-world networks in between. This is done by means of computer simulations using several update rules for the population evolutionary dynamics. We find the overall result that cooperation is sometimes inhibited and sometimes enhanced in those network structures, with respect to the mixing population case. The differences are due to different update rules and depend on the gain-to-cost ratio. We analyse and qualitatively explain this behavior by using local topological arguments.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
